Description
This is Jade. In reality, he was smaller, his fins much shorter, and his story was brief. He had potential. If he had just stayed in the tank, he could have lived a long and glorious life. But bettas are jumpers, and Jade? He found the one small hole in the lid and took his chance. Unfortunately, his escape ended in a forgotten space behind the tank, collecting dust for what was, without a doubt, far too long.
Bettas are survivors, built for conditions most fish wouldn’t tolerate. In the Mekong River Basin, they live in rice paddies, shallow pools, and even temporary puddles left behind by storms. When water levels drop, they use their labyrinth organ to breathe air, adapting to environments that would kill other fish. But this same instinct makes them notorious jumpers in captivity. Without a lid, or with even the smallest gap, they’ll take their shot at freedom—sometimes with tragic results.
This 5×7 art print imagines Jade in the form he never got to be. His long, flowing fins flare outward, exaggerated like the fighter he could have been. The vibrant green and blue tones contrast sharply against the dark background, giving him a presence that feels larger than life—because, for a brief moment, he was.
Printed on high-quality paper, this piece serves as a reminder: bettas are jumpers. Keep your tanks covered. And maybe, in some way, Jade’s story will help another fish live a little longer.
